The Motor Trade Association has done some interesting research about our vehicle buying habits. We apparently march to the beat of a different drum compared to the rest of the world. Toyota’s Corolla is tops here and worldwide but that's where the similarities end. We go overboard for utes and SUVs. The MTA notes, "New Zealand buyers showed a strong preference for practical, multi-task type vehicles, while the rest of the world tended more towards smaller and mid-sized four cylinder vehicles." New Zealand’s Top 10 featured two SUVs, four utes and only four standard passenger vehicles. Worldwide, it the top 10 included eight passenger cars, one SUV and one ute – the Ford F150. With the exception of Ford’s F Series, all the models in the world’s best selling list are available in New Zealand.

It's partly because the ute/car/wagon have become so blurred as utes get more and more car-like.
