If Ford Ranger won, how come Toyota's so happy?

At the end of the day, or in this case the year, Toyota couldn't keep the Ford Ranger from dethroning Hilux as the top selling ute, a position it has enjoyed for longer than many readers of 4wdNewz have been alive. According to provisional sales figures from Ford, the Ranger was overall ute leader for 2014 with a total of 6345 sold.

Toyota, however, did not slink away, tail between legs. A day after the Ford announcement, Toyota came out with a new advertising slogan that you may be seeing a lot of, showing a Hilux with the message, Number ONE, everyone else is talking Number Twos.” And, in smaller print, “Hilux. NZ’s No 1 selling 4x4 ute.” A press release conceded that Toyota couldn’t do the business with the 2WD range due to “supply shortages” – allowing Ford to take the overall title. But its total of 4306 4WD Hiluxes beat Ranger’s 4x4 tally by some 600 units.

Oh yes, and Toyota was overall sales leader for the 27th consecutive year, so the universe remains aligned for another year.
