Twelve questions for 2012

1. Have you noticed how few Defender 90s are on the used market?

2. But is that because nobody wants to buy one?

3. Have you noticed that the Tigerz11 is emerging as one of the top Chinese winches?

4. Does anyone know whether there was a Tigerz1 to 10?

5. But would you buy a Chinese winch anyway?

6. How many more North Island paper roads will be blocked in 2012?

7. Will we grow sick of winch challenges in 2012?

8. Will 2012 mark the start of a run on portal axles so real off-roaders can dump those little 35s and size-up to 40s and 44s?

9. Why doesn't the Christchurch City Council make a giant 4WD park in one of the abandoned suburbs?

10. Aren't petrol 4WDs a pain in the arse on wet club trips?

11. When is someone going to do a good website all about 4WD tracks, an electronic successor to the Sibly-Cockroft books?

12. How many times in 2012 will the media brand 4WDs as gas-guzzling monsters?

  3. If it's so good, Anonymous, why not learn to spell the winch's name correctly: Runva.

    1. Have you noticed how few Defender 90s are on the used market?

Yes. And you should probably not have sold yours for so little. :P

    2. But is that because nobody wants to buy one?

No. They are a good piece of machinery and owners probably know they are going to be a rare commodity when LR finally gives up on the off-road market in 2015(?).

    3. Have you noticed that the Tigerz11 is emerging as one of the top Chinese winches?

    Yes.

    4. Does anyone know whether there was a Tigerz1 to 10?

    No.

    5. But would you buy a Chinese winch anyway?

Thomas still going strong after some 30 years.

    6. How many more North Island paper roads will be blocked in 2012?

    Uggh.

    7. Will we grow sick of winch challenges in 2012?

Pretty much already am. Quite like the look of the English challenges though.

    8. Will 2012 mark the start of a run on portal axles so real off-roaders can dump those little 35s and size-up to 40s and 44s?

Anything over 35" should be banned on public and access tracks. Those of us with realistic wheels already either have to winch over sections where our tyres don't touch the ground in the ruts, or dig the tops off the ridge to allow the tyres to touch the ground. The net result is possible damage to the vehicle or ever deepening cutouts that become deep bogs or puddles. Neither option is appealing.

    9. Why doesn't the Christchurch City Council make a giant 4WD park in one of the abandoned suburbs?

    Good idea.

    10. Aren't petrol 4WDs a pain in the arse on wet club trips?

Not that I've noticed. Few have problems that affect engines and anyone can have other electrical problems.

    11. When is someone going to do a good website all about 4WD tracks, an electronic successor to the Sibly-Cockroft books?

The downside of that idea is that those tracks become targets for idiots and offroad versions of boy racers: the ones who insist on portals and 36"-40" tyres for runs up the likes of Thomsons or Maratoto and bugger up the track for everyone else.

    12. How many times in 2012 will the media brand 4WDs as gas-guzzling monsters?

How many lazy and narrow minded journalists exist? Find your answer there.

  8. If youre going to winch, go hydraulic an forget the electric rubbish. Almost all serious winchers are using hydro.
