Mixing fuel and water

Ford Ranger's 800mm wading depth, the best for a Japanese ute, begs the question, which one's worst? The answer, Nissan Navara D40 (and its wagon equivalent the Pathfinder) at just 450mm. Most are rated for 700mm. But the figures usually need to be taken with caution. Manufacturers usually have small print somewhere in the manual saying at what speed that depth is achievable, usually between 5 and 10km/h and usually, sensibly enough, in calm water.

Grand Cherokee: more of a splash than a wade.

Getting tyred

Here's an excellent article on tyres – better than anything I've read in a 4WD magazine. If you're thinking of sizing up, changing sizes or generally playing around with your rims and rubber, have a read. It's on a Jeep site, but has nothing specifically to do with that brand.

So you think you'll go for a hoon up the beach ...?
